Day 23 Kenny Lake to Valdez

Or I saw my first Alaskan bear. It was cool he just walked up to the salmon hatchery to grab dinner.  Unfortunately there were alot of people running to get a good look at him, too close for me.  I stayed a safe distance.  While we were waiting to see this bear the sea lions were feasting on salmon and entertaining us.  Above it all were 3 bald eagles circling and landing and taking off again.

The drive down was beautiful saw numerous waterfalls and one large glacier, the Worthington.  I walked down to the lower viewing area but did not walk outto the glacier.  Being at sea level is nice a little chilly but nice.  We have water front property for the next two days.  I am so happy to be sharing my adventures with all of you.

Day 22 The Road to McCarthy

Roy slept late today an advantage to staying in one place.  I woke up about 7 which is late for me.  Walked around enjoyed the morning woke Roy about 9am.  I did post some pictures from the flight over Kennicott Alaska yesterday.

We stopped by a Yak farm, couldn’t take the tour because it would require about a ten minute walk. So we headed to the airport to see the fish wheels up close.  A guy was cutting up the fish and then feeding the scraps to the seagulls.  They just rotate in the water and catch fish in one of the two baskets, they then fall into a holding container.  Then the guy takes them out with a net and kills them then fillets them.  The nice thing about the fish wheel is they can only catchfor personnal use or to barter with.

Sorry for the large picture

Before Chitina there was a cool waterfall called Liberty Falls stopped.  Headed into the big town of Chitina for lunch at the Chitina Motel. The town feels like a Stephen King novel.  Roy had reindeer sausage it was too spicy, I had a yak burger sweet but dry.  After lunch we headed towards McCarthy with a stop on the easement, rock bars to see more fish wheels.  We journeyed through a one lane gorge cut out for the train in the early 1900s. The first bridge we came upon was constructed in 1974 and reconnected McCarthy with the rest of the world.  The railway bridge would was out every year.  This is where the other fish wheels were, we also saw dip net fishing here.  A person uses a big net and slowly swishes it back and forth in the cold water.

We encountered maybe 4 miles of compressed rock where we stayed in the middle to avoid railway spikes.  Then the road became chip sealed, so no real risk of tire damage.  We drove to mile 17 where there is a single lane wooden rail bridge you have to drive over.  It is 293 feet above the gorge, this was the “HIGH point” of the trip.  All in all the McCarthy road did not live up to the hype.  Roy can now say he drove it though.  Tomorrow off to Valdez and oil.

I Couldn’t Wait

These are a few pictures from yesterday.  The rainbow is from our last stop in Canada

Day 21 We Flew There and Back

It was AMAZING today.  We headed to the airport at 8am arrived at 8:30am for a 9am flight.  Where else can you do that but in Alaska heading towards McCarthy.  If anyone has seen the “reality” show Edge of Alaska that is where it was filmed.  As one of the shuttle drivers said they want to film you then hand you a script.

The flight over was a little cloudy, I was still able to see some glaciers.  You know the blue you see in some of the glacier lakes on a TV show they are bluer but add a little green.  The color is not one I could put a name on to do it justice.  It also rained on the way over which was interesting no wipers that high up.  I learned about rock glaciers, same as ice glaciers but the rock is moving slowly.

I PROMISE TO POST SOME PICTURES THIS WEEKEND.  We will be in Anchorage.

I was very proud of Roy we got to Kennicott after landing in McCarthy he did quite a bit of walking.  He wanted to see the mill building which was at the end of town.  We had lunch at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge which was near where we got dropped off.  He climbed the stairs and the views were amazing, we had a good lunch.  We took the drive down so no stairs, then meandered towards the mill.  Kennicott was an old copper mining town, interesting read on the net.

The flight back was a little bumpy because of the wind, I sat in the front again.  Both ways I saw no animals, but lots of green.  There was a river we flew over that has never been touched by humans.  It can only be seen by the air.

As we are here tomorrow we are taking the car down the one lane McCarthy road to say we did it.  Talked to some people who drove it today and said it wasn’t bad.  I will give an update on that tomorrow.

Day 20 White River to Kenny Lake

Nice drive on the Alcan today.  I was able to be in two countries at once without a passport.  Speaking of passports you do know they are supposed to be signed.  The agent spanked us and said we should sign them before the next time.  It was cool to stand in two countries at the same time.  I got a picture of the marker and me.  Construction wasn’t to bad but it did bounce around the stuff I tightly packed.  Not so tightly packed, it’s the pesky TV.  Tomorrow is the big day I will do everything in my power to get pictures posted.  We are taking rain gear just in case because we will be gone all day.  Will post more tomorrow, here until the morning of the 12th, then onto Valdez

Day 19 Takhini Hot Springs to White River

Or last night in Canada this go around!  I am amazed at how quickly time is going.  Tomorrow we will be hitting our first stop in Alaska where we will be spending the first three nights in Chitina.  This will be the jumping off point for McMarthy and Kennicott Alaska, here there is an old mining town.  Roy and I will be flying in on Sunday spending the day exploring then flying back.  So look for some cool pictures and blogs when we are in civilization again.

Day 18 Whitehorse round 1

Roy was feeling better today so we rode the trolley down the waterfront of Whitehorse.  We also went to a farmer’s market where I was given two small white turnips I told the guy we were camping and could not go through the whole bunch.  I asked if he wanted anything for them he said no.  That was cool.  We are also trying to collect stamps by visiting historic places in the Yukon, listed in a book.  If you visit 20 of the sites you get entered to win two troy ounces of gold.  If you visit 10 sites you get entered for one troy ounce.  So keep your fingers crossed.  I will share. One more night at the hot springs then we have one more night in Canada.  Saturday night we will be back in Alaska using all the same colored money,  Canada does have pretty money.  We have two long days but I’m ok with that  I am antsy to get to Alaska we have been on the road for over 3500 miles.  We are coming up on some spotty internet so you might get a bunch of post all at once.

This is round one because we will be back on the return trip.

Day 17 Staying Put

Things happen for a reason, yesterday when we were driving up to the campsite we decided to extend the stay.  Good thing Roy developed what we think is food poisoning so the sight seeing got pushed back a day. We did go out and get a couple of pictures of wacky roadside attractions.

I am upset I CAN NOT do hot springs I did try the temp feĺt ok but it raised my body temp.  I enjoyed sitting in the springs but now balance is way off. Oh well we are on vacation. Tomorrow I will post more pictures and play tacky tourist

Day 16 Johnson’s Crossing to Takhini Hot Springs

Also known as change of plans. We or I did not realize that our first stop in Alaska had no electric nor did our third.  So instead of doing two nights here we are doing three.  Our last stop in Canada did not have electric either so we changed that too. This trip has been amazing journey.  We are still going to McCarthy but by plane this should be a blast.  I will let you know how the flight was that will be July 10. I can’t believe how fast time is going.

We are going to try the hot springs maybe, I know Roy will.  We will also get shopping done and I will post pictures of some of the wacky things in White Horse which is about 15 miles from here. Tonight we ate at a game restaurant Roy had elk, I had halibut.  Catch up tomorrow.
